Message Japanese is a hard language to learn, but it can be done with a lot of effort. I am a senior in college (at the young age of 24) and I have taken Japanese for 3 years, going into my fouth year now. The speaking is not super difficult as long as you use it frequently, like any language. The reading, however, is diffuclt. Katakan and hiragana are not that hard to read, but you wont be able to read anything (such as a service manuel, newspaper, brochure and so on) without extensive knowledge of kanji characters, which are very difficult. You need to know about 2,000 of them to be able to read that kind of stuff. I suggest getting together with a Japanese student to help you, and you could help them with english. Thats what I did, and I ending up marrying my Japanese tutor! It is a great help to be able to speak it everyday, so I highly suggest metting some native Japanese speakers. Also, if you are really serious about it, I suggest going to Japan for at least a semester. I went in 1998 (and again last year to get married) and it helps a lot because you are immersed in the language. Anyway, I hope that I have helped somewhat. You can do it but it does take more effort, especially in the reading, than other languages. Good luck!
